When It Rains…

As I sit here listening to the outer bands of Hurricane Dolly pitter-patter on the metal roof of my apartment, I have reminded of the irony in my job search.  As most of you are aware from my earlier post – “A Step in the Right Direction” – I have landed an internship with a local advertising agency.  I am ecstatic about the opportunity.

A few days after the post I received a phone call from another local advertising agency wondering if I would be interested in interviewing for a paid internship.  I told them I would be interested and I had a phone interview today with a company representative.  The interview went well (at least I thought it did) and at the end of the conversation the young woman I had been talking with said, “I am actually an intern here.  Do you have any questions for me about the internship?”  I was a little put off at first thinking, “What!?!  I guess I am not worthy of a full time employee.”  But the more I got to thinking about it I realized, this company is letting the HR intern conduct preliminary interviews by herself.  What opportunities would I have as an intern?  It speaks to their trust in their employees and their willingness to expose you to the real workings of the industry.  I regained my composure quickly and began to ask her about the professional development activities that are provided by the employer.  It went smoothly, I felt I established a good rapport with the interviewer, and I should know what they thought of me fairly soon.  With this success under my belt I went back to looking for part time employment for my internship duration.

Around 3:45 this afternoon I received another call from an employer that I applied to over a month ago.  I have a former colleague that now works at that employer who suggested I should apply.  Well, they want me to come in either Friday or Monday for a sit-down interview for a full time position that would actually pay me money and benefits and stuff.

After answering a few questions with the gentleman that called and setting up possible times for interviews, I hung up the phone and started to shake my head.  After a year and a half of job search I had begun to be discouraged that I would ever land anything other than the dry cleaning job.  Now that I have a firm offer, I am being pursued by three different companies.  When I told Tammy who called she started to laugh.  I guess she thinks its a little ridiculous as well.
